Squid have returned with menacing track ‘Crispy Skin’, exploring the reality of upholding your moral compass in the face of true horrors in a future gone wrong. Constantly on edge, the single changes genre, tempo and attitude throughout its six-minute running time, immersing you in singer Ollie Judge’s anxious state.
‘Crispy Skin’ is Squid’s lead single from their upcoming album ‘Cowards’, a concept album following the thin line between right and wrong. The track was influenced by ‘Tender is the Flesh’, a dystopian novel Judge read where cannibalism becomes a societal norm. Judge shares on the single’s background, “I think when most people read books like these they picture themselves as the sort of person that would take the moral high-ground within these narratives. The track was written about how the reality of having a moral-compass in these stories of desperation and horror would be extremely difficult”.
Blending elements of rock, funk, sprechgesang and electronic music, ‘Crispy Skin’ opens the door to Squid expanding their sound as well as their social commentary, with ‘Cowards’ lining up to be their most anticipated release yet.
‘Cowards’ is out Feb 7th via Warp. Pre order.
