Listen: Blood Wizard Announce New Album ‘Grinning William’ and Share Single ‘Devil Dressed In Disguise’

Blood Wizard share ‘Devil Dressed in Disguise’ and announce new album ‘Grinning William’ – due 25th October via Sad Club Records

While Cai Burns has been mostly recognised across the past year working UK stages as part of wizarding alt-folk ensemble pencil, his own Blood Wizard project has been, since 2020, steadily accumulating an impressive run of releases veering from rugged Alex G troubadour’ing to pirouetting art-rock.

Now announcing sophomore album ‘Grinning William’, Blood Wizard are clearly entering a whole new emboldened era. Produced by Theo Verney – acclaimed for his work on the recent Egyptian Blue album –  what we’ve heard so far already sound like two opposing sides of the same collectable coin, with further delights surely there for us lying in anxious wait.

Taking the lounging shoegaze of recent cut ‘babytooth’, lifting it by the collar and slamming it against the wall –  new single ‘Devil Dressed in Disguise’ snaps into action with a rollicking bustle and twang. Each and every beat and note is perfectly plotted in its appropriate place, as if embroidered indelibly upon its place in hipster time in a direct expression of post-punk pointillism à la The Cool Greenhouse or ‘Town Centre’ era Squid.

And as ever in the world of Blood Wizard, the track’s calling card it’s the the dryly cutting Syd Barrett-lite monotone of Burns’ lead vocal, pregnant with the kind of dark humour that might put, say, an ironic, bloody slasher-horror smile on the front cover of a bouncy, ebullient indie record…
