A heart-renting embrace of a track about reconnecting with a distant best friend, the new single from Leeds’ shaene hits the listener like one reverb-drenched spectral fist. Hooking you square in the solar plexus, its 4 minutes rob you of all breath and motion, rendering you a wrecked, fumbling tangle of raw feeling – such are its awesome swathes of sad, stupefying sound.
While shaene prefer to adopt the genre tag of ‘lo-fi emo’, it’s hard not to throw that genre ‘Shoegaze’ into the fray too. With its plumes of misted vocals and its towering pillars of wet, dripping guitars, ‘tom’ recalls so many classics of the genre, but feels no less immediate or compelling for it.
Following on from last September’s glisteningly excellent debut collection ‘time lost/ time regained’, The track also features as the lead single for the fourth edition of Come Play With Me Records’s ‘Side by Side‘ Compilation series, which supports women, marginalised genders, LGBTQ+ artists and people of colour with ties to the North of England.
