London’s Most Things Share Debut Single ‘Shops!’
Defined by an abrasively deadpan vocal – pitched somewhere between roguish irony and wearied resignation – Most Things’ debut single looks back at London’s already swelled array of pared back post-punk bands and thinks, ‘hmm, there’s too much going on here. Let’s strip it back some more.’ Spelunking for the richest emotion using only rock’s most foundational rhythmic tools, the London duo manage to build up all the high-rises, high-streets and construction sites that define them with a humble triarchy of bass, drums and vocals.
It’s minimalist and anti-modern in its approach, yet deeply rooted in the experiences and complications of dog-eat-dog inner-city life. An anthem for late-night pilgrims to Londis on the corner for a tin of soup or a spicy packet noodle, on the surface ‘Shops!’ seems flippant but in actuality, against all odds, strikes at the frosty heart of what it means to be spending half your income on just living under a roof.
