An enchanted paradox lies at the heart of C Turtle. It’s in those zinging guitar lines that come out of leftfield, bursting out of the mix, kinda out of whack, except that it’s perfect. It’s in those vocals chanted half-audibly as if from the back of the room, yet bundled with so much energy as to mainline straight to the heart.
If such ‘messy’, inchoate stylings might otherwise be a hallmark of a band choosing to revel in their modest resources like a pig in the mud, for C Turtle, it’s become more a deeply intentioned way of life; they’re a band that seem hell bent on taking lo-fi rock to it’s highest fidelities yet.
The culmination of all this is that ‘2001’ is as pure an expression as you could ever want of the joys of ‘coming-of-age’. Guitarist Cole Quirke cites Lord Of The Rings, Cartoon Network and Dragon Ball Z as the key touchstones of his own ‘2001’-era. But dated cultural references aside, C Turtle’s immaculately ramshackle design, on a higher plain, is charm, wonder and exuberance manifest.
