Issue Fifty-Six arrives as we all take a big deep breath before stepping into festival season. June has also seen us announce the very first So Young Tour and it’s our headliners, Cardinals who are on the cover.

Ahead of big support dates with Fontaines D.C. and Wunderhorse, the Cork five-piece, Cardinals, have shared new single ‘Big Empty Heart’. The band talk to us about their debut album, which we’re told we can expect in 2026, as well as the disheartening fetishization of Irish culture.

We’ve been speaking with Squid for years and it’s a pleasure to chat again. Ahead of their upcoming return to End of the Road Festival, an event close to Ollie Judge’s heart, we catch up on their latest record, ‘Cowards’ and their recent tour of the US. Another band heading to Dorset for End of the Road is LA’s The Sophs. The shiny new signing to Rough Trade Records are proud of bucking the Tik Tok discovery trend and they tell us of howsome cold emails, not exclusive to their new label home, sparked a whole new future for the band.

Now signed with Domino, These New Puritans have a new album out titled ‘Crooked Wing’. Our conversation delves into the long process behind this record, working with Caroline Polachek and their obsession with field recordings.

One of our favourite new bands is Silver Gore. After blowing us away at The Great Escape and with new music on the horizon, we caught up with duo Ava Gore and Ethan P. Flynn to dig into their love for each other and their “resources war” origin story. Chicago’s Lifeguard have finally released their debut album. According to them, ‘Ripped and Torn’ isn’t meant to be overanalysed, its just another album. But they hope you like it.

Three new artists on our pages for the first time are noisy welsh band, MORN, Iceland’s great hopes, Spacestation and Third Man’s new singings, Die Spitz. And on the theme of Third Man, it’s with pleasure that we welcome back Hotline TNT. Ahead of the new record, on which they are now formally ‘a band’, we discuss the change from a solo project, the sacrifices swallowed in that process, and their rejection of the shoegaze label.

We are pleased to bring back the Who Are You? section of So Young. Across two pages you’ll find quick fire questions with some of our most recent discoveries. This time around we introduce pollyfromthedirt, Spanish Horses, Uncle Junior, bathing suits, SLAG, Restlesstaxis and wing!.

In Print: So Young Magazine Issue Fifty-Five.

Issue Fifty-Five arrives in the world as festival lineups begin to complete and sporadic sunshine begins to tease. The cover feature of this issue travels to New York and into the world of Model/Actriz where the band welcomea brighter era with upcoming second album, ‘Pirouette’. Our conversation spans the political impact that’s possible within your immediate community, the art of trying less and steering the live show away from aggression and toward collective joy.

Staying in New York, but with strong UK foundations, YHWH Nailgun take our call for the second time (find Issue Forty-Six for the first one) to discuss their debut album ‘45 Pounds’. Released via AD93 and adopted by the ‘6Music Dad’, the NYC four-piece chat to us about the London enthusiasm and more.

Westside Cowboy are Manchester’s hottest new prospect. Off the back of performing at a very packed We Are So Young night, we reached out to dig into their brand of ‘Britainicana’. Continuing the theme of hot prospects, London-via-Dublin’s Kissing On Camera and Groningen’s Real Farmer are also interviewed inside.

Now back home in Seattle, Car Seat Headrest’s Will Toledo is preparing to add to an already vast and impressive catalogue of records. ‘The Scholars’ is due for release in May and in the midst of preparing Patreon content, Will kindly took our call to chat about it.

For a project which could be described as a second thought for its members, New Zealand’s School Fair have quietly built a loyal following in the UK, a followingthat was glad to see new album ‘bird the kid’ released in January. After a short stint of shows in the UK and now back home, De Stevens agreed to an interview on it all.

We also speak with Austin based music photographer Pooneh Ghana after a successful SXSW and designer, Rhi Dancey talks us through the ethos of their brand, collective and agency.

To finish us off and returning to our printed pages are Elias Rønnenfelt, this time to chat on his solo work away from Iceage, London’s The Orchestra (For Now) who have released their debut EP since our last chat, and feeble little horse who called it a day, got back together and released a new single since our chat in Issue Forty-Three.

Issue Fifty-Four is our first issue of 2025 and marks the beginning of an exciting year for new music. Inside the pages of this magazine you’ll find conversations with artists returning with new albums, sharing debut records and EP’s, and teasing their very first public releases.

One band with a new record and a particularly interesting new dynamic are Black Country, New Road. With their third studio album ‘Forever Howlong’ announced and single ‘Besties’ signalling the future sound of the group, we call to discuss their relationships with each other, retaining humour in their songs and only making music that represents the current version of themselves. Black Country, New Road are on the cover.

Having recently made the move from the active DIY scene in Chicago to the hustle and noise of NYC, you’d be forgiven to assume that new music from Horsegirl may mirror the hecticness of their new city, however the opposite is true. On new album, ‘Phonetics On and On’, the three piece cherish the space in their music and find new freedom via the guidance of Cate Le Bon and the evergrowing confidence in their relationship as a band. We chat on all of the above inside.

The Murder Capital are preparing for the release of their third album ‘Blindness’. It’s their first record without any bruising from the pandemic and the surrounding measures, yet its with this record they find themselves indiviudally split across countries whilst more intact with a singular view of their music than ever. Discussing the music, the necessity of continuing to ‘work’, and the understanding of modern day patriotism, we interview frontman James McGovern inside.

More records discussed inside include ‘Evenfall’, the debut album from South London’s Sam Akpro, and ‘Debunker’, the second album from London-via-Barcelona’s Eterna. The former details the patchwork of influences and locations that built the record, while for Eterna’s Guillem Peeters the process was a more isolated affair.

Squamish, British Columbia is home to new band Cistern whose EP ‘New Standard’ was released in November 2024. With single ‘Crisis’ on repeat and a debut album being worked on, we thought it a great time to learn a little more about the projects beginnings. They take our call while walking the streets of Squamish. Another recently released debut EP is ‘Four Potraits of the Same Ugly House’ from Cork’s Pebbledash. Following a practice and ahead of their trip to London for our We Are So Young night, we gave them a call to discuss their sound and their development away from 6 minute epics.

Rounding up our artist features are conversations in the capital with Hot Stamp and Green Star, plus a trip to Stockholm for a chat with young new favourites, Clutter.

We chat with Jordan Kee, the incredible artist behind the visuals for Black Country, New Road’s current album campaign. We also speak with exciting Welsh artist, Caitlin Floyd-Molyneux as well as Morgan Sidle, the creative behind DIY fashion brand, Atelier.

2025 may already be close to guitar comeback breaking point, but one return that piqued our attention above others was that of The Maccabees.  With the band ending just as we were getting started with So Young, The Maccabees live return for All Points East 10 years after their last album ‘Marks to Prove It’ has caused a mighty stir. With no promise beyond one show on one date in one city, the excitement was still enough for us to have them on the cover.

Issue Fifty-Three is our final magazine of 2024, and naturally we look ahead to next year with it. Well, not before we reflect quickly with London’s Moin and LA’s urika’s bedroom, both of whom have just released new albums. We discuss them inside.

No stranger to our pages, Jojo Orme AKA Heartworms has announced her debut album ‘Glutton For Punishment’, a feat shared by Dublin’s DIY hero, Skinner, and LA’s Faerybabyy, an artist who keeps her faith front and centre, and has no trouble finding commonality between her favoured country music, and her performed post-punk. We chat with all three.

Portals of Discovery is our dive into the alternative hotbed of Ireland. With no net thrown to falsify a scene, and with the respect that this isn’t a one off wave, we zoom in on the new artists from Ireland that we’re feeling particularly excited by right now.

A few more for you. We introduce you to The Paris Match, a London Rock n Roll group who care only for good songs and getting people moving. In Ireland, Search Results are a three piece who are charming everyone who comes into contact with them. They talk us through their new music and why living with each other isn’t always the best idea. In NYC via Philadelphia, Kassie Krut are preparing for their debut EP release via the ever reliable Fire Talk. Dizzee Rascal is a consistent theme in our chat. Glasshouse Red Spider Mite are rising beautifully in Brighton, with a new single out now, we caught up with them for advice on whether bands should live together and more.

And finally, London promoter-come-label-come-magazine, Far From have been curating some of the most authentic and exciting nights in London for guitar music. We dig into the project inside.

If this summer’s festival season was the celebration of the year that came before, Autumn’s new releases and hectic tour schedule leaves us with no choice but to focus on the here and now. One artist with no intention of looking back is Geordie Greep, the former black midi member is delivering ‘The New Sound’ via his new solo project, an album which moves away from feelings of repetition and works within a stricter set of rules. We speak for the cover feature.
Issue Fifty-Two is full to the brim with conversations that span household names, like Julian Casablancas, as we discuss the new record from The Voidz, through to Japanese newcomers, bed who are breaking the norm and sticking two fingers up to the standard practices expected from artists in their home country.
With new records on their way, we’re thrilled to welcome Amyl and The Sniffers, Honeyglaze, Nilüfer Yanya, Man/Woman/Chainsaw and Divorce back to our pages. Here for the first time, we touch base with LA’s untitled (halo) ahead of their UK visit this year and London’s Hank who have been sharing stages with notable names and have recently released their debut EP ‘Twist Grip’.
Completing this issue alongside an interview with Nottingham’s excellent Blood Wizard, we speak to Tyler Bainbridge, the man behind NYC’s most respected recommendations newsletter, Perfectly Imperfect. Having celebrated our tenth birthday at The George Tavern earlier this year, we speak to iconic landlady, Pauline Forster about the venue’s history and future. We talk village life and Oasis reunions with Fashion designer, Sam Nowell and self-taught Irish painter, Peter Doyle gives us an insight into his practice.

So Young Issue Fifty-One finds us in the centre of festival season, a time where we can often enjoy many of our favourites, old and new, in one field, in one weekend. With less gigs and people jetting around, the summer can often present a lull in brand new artists emerging, but that’s not the case for 2024 and this issue is evidence of that. Here’s what’s inside.

On the cover, Wunderhorse are preparing themselves for the release of their second album, ‘Midas’. Since we last spoke, the dynamic has shifted from Jacob Slater’s solo project to a cohesive and collaborative band. The impact of that is, well, ‘Midas’. An unapologetic, raw, rock record which relishes it’s edges and has no intention of conforming to trends. Sat avoiding the rain with the whole band in London, we discuss learning from the likes of Pixies and Fontaines D.C. on tour, recording in the same room as Nirvana and cutting the bullshit.

September will see the release of the debut album from London-via-Yorkshire’s DEADLETTER. ‘Hysterical Strength’ marks the bands latest peak in a four year career as guitar music underdogs. No ‘buzzy’ moment in sight, just ‘one step in front of the other’ growth. You only have to take a look at the bands ongoing, gruelling tour schedule to understand that DEADLETTER are a live band, and this record captures that energy – pairing their honest observations of the world with danceable post-punk. We chat inside.

Shoegaze, used rightly, wrongly, readily, has felt some serious growth as a genre over the last few years and LA’s julie are one of the most exciting and innovative new artists to be born from the sound. Now signed to Atlantic and preparing their debut album for release, we gave them a call whilst in Ohio for their tour with Faye Webster to talk through their move from Orange County to LA, the influence of their new community and the impact of other art mediums on their music.

Bristol favourites and longtime friends, LICE have a new album on the way via new label partner, AD 93. In an interview that leads our writer to question his everyday existence, we discuss ‘Third Time At The Beach’ with frontman Alastair Shuttleworth.

Now in Lisbon, the full time home for his art studio, Orlando Weeks’ creativity is not limited to his music but he does have a new album out. Titled ‘LOJA’, after the local name given to his studio space, Orlando delivers a positive record which explores all that he left behind in London. We gave him a call to dig into the breaking of old habits and how music and visual arts elevate each other when paired.

It seems there’s barely a moment where Jake Lenderman isn’t on the road. Be it touring worldwide with Wednesday on guitar, or taking the music of his project MJ Lenderman to an ever growing audience. It’s the latter music that we discuss on the phone as new album ‘Manning Fireworks’ is on its way.

As always, it’s with great excitement that we present some brand new artists to our pages. We start with London duo, Most Things. With just one video up on YouTube (‘Shops’), it’s very early days but with a full live schedule coming up and, we’re told, plenty of music ready to go, we were enthused to find out what we could at this point.

Another new band from the capital with only a YouTube presence to their name are Tooth. Impressed by their youthful energy and 00’s indie spirit when performing at one of our We Are So Young nights, we followed up with a call to see what’s going on behind the scenes.

Staying in London but via Bristol, we find Pem. Her new EP ‘cloud work’ was recently released via Ali Chant’s Fascination Street label and is a beautiful listen. Eager to know more about where these songs came from and what’s coming next, we gave Emily a call.

Finishing off overseas, Sex Week are an exciting new duo from NYC. Sitting somewhere between the dark and light of bar italia and Chanel Beads, there’s an atmosphere in the pair’s music that feels haunting yet comforting. We gave them a ring to find out the story to date.  And finally, Melbourne’s Gut Health have a debut album (‘Stiletto’) on its way. Catching them at the back end of a EU tour, we cased them on the themes of the record and their translation of their live shows to the studio sound.

We chat to Lulu Lin, the artist behind the striking new Fontaines D.C. album campaign and announce our collaborative t-shirt. Cork based photographer, Emilyn Cardona has given us a window into the world of Irish band Cardinals over the last year or so. We spoke to Emilyn about her aspirations and career so far. The GradList returns as we partner with Arts University Bournemouth once again to showcase some of their most talented new graduates.

Artists inside:

Josh Whettingsteel, Lulu Lin, Gisela Navarro, Thomas Spooner, Sam Nowell, Nurit Gross, Orlando Weeks, Peter Doyle, Melinda Ureczki, Dominika Leszczynska, Millie Johnson, Erin May Cooper, Heidi Teremetz, Tom Filer, Arthur Gnivko, Denisa Ailenei, Freya Relfe-Dacey, Martin Samways, Maisie Barr, Tommy Brentnall, Emilyn Cardona, REN

Issue Forty-Nine is our second of 2024 and it’s an exciting time. Some of our favourites are releasing new music, new names are emerging and festival line ups are completing. One of those favourites releasing new music is NYC’s Been Stellar and they’re on the cover. Since their debut EP in 2022, the five-piece have toured relentlessly, joining the likes of The 1975, Fontaines D.C. and Shame on extensive runs of the UK, Europe and the US. In between, they’ve teamed up with Dan Carey to record ‘Scream From New York, NY’, their debut album which is released in June via Dirty Hit. On the final night of their EU tour with The 1975, we gave the band a call to discuss their collectively adopted home of New York and their favourites places in the UK.

From a much anticipated debut to a much anticipated return. DIIV are very much back and their new record ‘Frog in Boiling Water’ is out in May and we joined them at a Hackney hotel to chat the balance between happy and sad, band democracy and searching for Nessie.

London’s Goat Girl are one of our most featured over the years, and it’s with this third record that, with confidence, they’ve grown out of ‘the box’ they’d been placed within and it shows in the way they speak. With a brief political message for good measure, we chat with current line up of Lottie, Rosy and Holly about their new album ‘Below The Waste’.

Dublin’s Annie-Dog released one of our favourite singles of 2024 so far in ‘The Pressures of the Heart’. Intrigued to know more, we called to chat Billy Corgan, TikTok and starting the ‘inaccessible era’.

Another first time chat inside the magazine is with Manchester’s Martial Arts. Since impressing at our London club night, and releasing debut single ‘Warsaw’, we thought it was important to know more. Enjoyment and playing loud are at the heart of things for this band.

Heading back across the pond, and back to NYC, BODEGA have remade their secret album ‘Our Brand Could Be Yr Life’ – released as 33 tracks in 2015 under then name, Bodega Bay. The new record revisits those early tracks and breathes new life into the best bits. We give the band a call to chat through that decision, the process, and why we should keep an eye out for hardcore band, Nodega.

Staying in New York, Chanel Beads is the project from Shane Lavers and the debut album is due via Jagjaguwar in April. The project is described by Shane as “snare drums, hoodies, and jeans” – a statement which makes more and more sense the more you look and listen. Our interview attempts to dig even deeper.

Concluding our time in the big apple, Slow Fiction have announced their new EP ‘Crush’ which is out in May. After taking their time to work on new songs and progress their sound, shows with Thus Love, English Teacher and Sprints have motored things along. We called to hear more.

Speaking to us for the second time, Cork’s Cardinals have a debut EP on its way. The debut self-titled EP comes in June and we meet the band after a video shoot, and before a trip to Texas, to chat Windmill lock-ins, the music on the EP and their debut headline tour.

Finishing off our music features, we chat with two new London bands. One, a group of seasoned musicians who’ve teamed up to form pencil, and the other, a brand new seven-piece called The Orchestra (For Now) who’ve been cutting their teeth in small venues, predominantly the Windmill, Brixton.

We also catch up with Kalisha Quinlan the photographer behind the creative campaign of Lime Garden’s debut album and we dig in to the blossoming music/fashion crossover started by some of the designers forging the aesthetic path for The Last Dinner Party and others.

Issue Forty-Eight is our first of 2024 and our first chance to highlight the artists we are most excited about this year. Twelve months on from their debut interview, Mary in the Junkyard are on the cover. The trio have just released their new single ‘Ghost’ and following an introductory year which included countless live performances, sold out headline shows and a much anticipated debut single (‘Tuesday’), it seemed the perfect time to dig a little deeper to see how this newfound attention is sitting with the band.

At the other end of the release spectrum, Leeds’ Yard Act are preparing themselves for the release of their second album, ‘Where’s My Utopia?’ in March. After establishing that nobody is paying for Zoom, we dig into the new record, New Orleans and how James is letting the band know what the album is about – interview by interview.

February is home to the debut album from Brighton’s Lime Garden. Having travelled this journey with them extensively, in print and more, we gave them a call, post rehearsal, to discuss “judgement day”, ‘One More Thing’ and how they’re already writing album two.

Joining Lime Garden on tour are London-via-Cambridge’s Ugly. The six-piece made a very welcome return last year and they have a new EP on the way. In our conversation with the band, we travel the transformation of their sound, touring with Black Country, New Road and the influence of spirituality.

Within these pages we welcome two more debut albums. The first from London’s Whitelands. The band have been working with shoegaze label heroes Sonic Cathedral for some time now, and are about to tour with shoegaze legends, Slowdive. We chat to them about the record, ‘Night-bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day’ and the aforementioned tour. Staying in the capital, C Turtle are venturing towards the March release of their first album. Over a year on since our last chat, we give Cole a call (in China) to talk AI, ‘Expensive Thrills’ and Flabby Toad.

Stoke’s Christian Music will be a new name to most. Disinterested in ‘buzz’ and open to “play the game” with industry types, the long-time friends of fellow noise makers, UNIVERSITY are set for an exciting 2024. Eager to hear more about their latest single ‘Marimba-Tragic Death Cult’, we gave them a ring.

Keeping it loud, Manchester’s Duvet have become live favourites of ours. A string of singles and a handful of shows into their careers, the band have been impressing everywhere they go. We checked in to chat about the importance of venues like YES and the variety of influences within the band – in style and sound.

Rounding off our interview features are two bands separated by over 3000 miles. In Sheffield, City Parking have recently shared EP ‘It’s Mad Round Here’ and the follow up single, ‘Carl’ – both of which have been on regular rotation. Curious of the impact a city can make, and intrigued by the variety of influence on show, we spoke over email. In New York, where new alternative music is thriving, a new name is causing a stir in Voyeur. The band’s debut EP ‘Ugly’ is out now and we gave them a call to dig into their grunge influence and their fuzzy response to the club scene which surrounds them.

To finish, we satisfy our obsession with London’s Ebbb, a band who are retaining as much mystery as possible at this early stage, with some words on why you should be obsessed too. ‘The Other Folk’ tells the story of the alternative folk movement that’s happening right now and who’s at the forefront. Finally we get to know the artist behind Folly Group’s debut album artwork, Elli Antoniou.

Issue Forty-Seven is here, and with it we wave goodbye to 2023. On the cover are rising star, English Teacher – a band we’ve written about and spoken with since Spring 2021. As the band builds towards its inevitable ‘bigger project’ moment next year, and off the back of a sold out Scala in London, we caught them between their debut headline shows in the USA. We discuss old bands, Jools Holland and what a good debut album should do.

London’s Folly Group are edging closer to a long awaited debut album. ‘Down There!’ will be released in January 2024 and we gave the band a call to discuss making an album between jobs and distancing themselves from the post-punk pack.

The name Bill Ryder-Jones has often featured within our pages with reference to the records he’s produced (Hotel Lux, The Rhythm Method), but he’s now back with a new record of his own. ‘Iechyd Da’ will land in January and we joined him at The Social in Soho for a chat that spans family, ripping himself off and the influence of Wu-Tang Clan.

London’s Tapir! have been firm favourites for some time, and with the recent backing of Heavenly Recordings, we can be excited at the prospect of a debut album in January. With the wonder of their lore and nuance in mind, and the red heads off, we dig into ‘The Pilgrim, Their God and the King of My Decrepit Mountain’ and what we can expect afterwards.

Our conversation with Atlanta’s Omni is a special one. As you’ll find within our interview inside, Folly Group and their beginnings owe a nod to the works of Omni. To celebrate this, we arranged for Folly Group’s Sean Harper to interview Omni’s Philip Frobos and what comes out, alongside a dive into the new Omni record, ‘Souvenir’, is mutual influence and mutual appreciation.

Two new favourites are Lip Critic and Girl and Girl. The former are causing chaos in NYC and have recently signed to Partisan, whilst Brisbane’s Girl and Girl have just returned from a UK tour, and are taking some time to decompress the family friction inside the band. We chat to both inside.

Finishing off our new band features are Flip Top Head. The Brighton band have more members than songs at this point and following lots of fun at our London club night, We Are So Young, we were keen to dig further into the inner workings of the band.

Having just released his sophomore album, ‘Scream If You Don’t Exist’ we catch up with multidisciplinary artist Richie Culver to learn a bit more about his influences, inspirations and daily life.

The ‘Women in Revolt!’ exhibition at the Tate Britain is open until 7 April 2024. The exhibition expands the story of British art, mapping a landscape of creative practice from previously underrepresented voices. We visit the exhibition and talk with the curator and contributors.

We catch up with Sophie Spratley, founder of fast rising fashion brand ‘rabbit’ who we’ve recently collaborated with on a limited edition t-shirt.
